This exhibition is an interactive, hands-on exploration into the history of Maitland and its surrounding areas! There were a lot of things that did not happen in Maitland. There were no great battles fought on the soil, nor was it home to any infamous individuals. The town was not the epicenter of any great social movements, nor was it home to discoveries that would better humankind. Maitland was, and continues to be, a small town, like so many others.The story of Maitland is a story of seemingly ordinary people who lived through extraordinary times, a place where people made their homes while dramatic events unfolded in other parts of the world. People labored here, raised their families, loved, lost, thought, and created. The objects in the museum's collection reflect the brightness of these lives against the backdrop of a changing and often troubled world.Each artifact tells a story specific to a place and time. They are the carriers of the memories of the people who owned them, who felt that they were important enough to their own story to preserve them. Many of them are the prototypes of the objects that we use and hold dear today, objects which will one day carry our own memories forward.Welcome to Maitland's Attic, a gathering place of the unique items that tell of Maitland's past. About the Exhibition Mär Martinez, a Syrian American artist and Fulbright scholar, presents new work developed during her 2024–25 Fulbright research in Istanbul. Her project investigates traditional Turkish and Middle Eastern textile techniques while reflecting on themes of urbanization, surveillance, and cultural memory. Drawing from nighttime walks through Istanbul's neighborhoods, Martinez transforms architectural barriers, barbed wire, fences, and centuries old textile patterns, into motifs of both resistance and resilience. Her haunting paintings explore personal heritage, global textile history, and contemporary social commentary in poetic, layered form. The initial threads of this, her first solo museum exhibition, created in Istanbul and New York, began at the Art & History Museums of Maitland during her 2021–2023 Studio Artist Residency. Artist Q+A with Botanical Illustrator and Singer-Songwriter June Bunch featuring her Live Music and Visual Art This fun, free event features both live music and visual art of June Bunch as she dives into her illustrations after sharing original tunes. In the exhibition, June Bunch transforms 50 state flowers into botanical ballerinas. Her illustrations combine figure drawing with floral theatrics, adding elements of vibrant colors and texture-rich embroidery to her work. In an instant, her images stretch the viewer's eye past the present to see the blossom's full-seasonal vitality, summarized in one frozen motion. Bunch curates contemporary illustrations by studying plants' "choreography" of growth, illuminating their dance with vibrant colors and clean lines. Her visual art remains rooted in botany and ballet, featuring postures that hold emotional richness, highlighting human nature and flora in a bold, empowering way. The art is created first through expressive figure drawings and botanical sketches that are then translated digitally and drawn line-by-line with a pen-tool, tending to each marking with thoughtful detail. Inspired by jogo bonito — the beautiful game — the exhibition captures the culture surrounding soccer, from street pitches to stadium lights, with a particular nod to the tactile energy of 90s play: oversized jerseys, heavy shin guards, worn fields, and long practices that blurred effort into identity. For many, the field was the first studio, a place where failure wasn't an end but part of the process, where movement, timing, and instinct were learned through doing. Designers, photographers, videographers, and artists translate those experiences into visual form, exploring the moments just off the pitch where emotion gathers and the game reveals its deeper texture: passion, pride, frustration, and joy. No drawing experience is required! Open to all levels. Automatic drawing is a technique named by and commonly used by the Surrealists, which involves the artist directly and randomly moving the pen or drawing tool with no preconceived image or plan. This technique is similar to what writers termed "Stream of consciousness" writing, where, through a mental shift, drawing automatically allows participants to let their subconscious flow through their hands. Participants will be encouraged to draw their hearts' content out and learn to unshackle themselves from hesitation caused by the anxiety of being confronted by a blank sheet. Students will create many drawings using many different materials to get them out of their heads and out of their comfort zones. Students will learn about processes like automatism, frottage, and responsive drawing. The drawing doesn't ever have to be quote-on-quote finished it can be left as a single deposit of personal memory. There is no right or wrong way to practice automatic drawing. Register Here!
